POP is an art gallery that opened in January 2011 at Woolloongabba, designed for exhibiting and examining Postgraduate and Research students from Queensland College of Art, Griffith University. We seek also to collaborate with Other Projects linked with artists associated with QCA.
We recognised the intense necessity for a dedicated offsite student gallery at postgraduate level, particularly after The College Gallery closed in December 2009 at Tribune Street, South Bank (the conception of Prof Pat Hoffie and Dr. Jewel Mackenzie). The gallery absence was severely felt and I am proud to advise you that POP has commenced operations with an exciting exhibition program.
POP (Postgraduates and Other Projects) Gallery is situated in the new art precinct of Woolloongabba. We are situated near the major intersection of Stanley Street and Ipswich Road, close to Griffith University Art Gallery (QCA), Milani Gallery, and Woolloongabba Art Gallery, some of Brisbane’s well known contemporary galleries. Being placed off campus means our artists will benefit from new and diverse audiences, from 1000’s of commuters each day, to local residents and passing trade. The area is fast becoming a drawcard for culture vultures. Woolloongabba Bus stop is only two stops on the South East Bus-way from the South Bank bus stop, right near QCA, or less than 15 minutes walk.
POP is open Tuesday to Friday from 11am – 6pm and on Saturdays from 10am – 4pm. There is a fortnightly exhibition turnover, usually accompanied by an opening, artist talks or performance. There are two rooms, consisting of a main gallery and an installation space and/or projection room. A significant tool of an artist’s practice is “networking” and it has an important role to play in the social art context POP seeks to nurture. Come in and meet us, envisage the gallery as a potential space for exhibiting, and add your contact details to our guest list so we can invite you to exhibitions, openings, artist talks, performance, art films or discussions.
I look forward to your patronage and involvement with POP.
Regards,
Jo Diball
Gallery Director
